First Grade is a big step, mathematically, for children. Students in this grade, build on the foundational number sense skills developed in Kindergarten.
- In first grade, children learn to expand their oral counting by ones to 120. They also learn to count to 120 by 10s, to establish the foundation of place value.
- The expand their knowledge that the numbers 0 - 5 can be represented in different ways to the numbers 0 -10.
- First grade students are now formally taught the symbols for addition and subtraction while working with number sentences (5 + 2 = 7 and 7 - 2 = 5).
- Time to the hour
- Identification of basic shapes (rectangle, square, circle, triangle, and trapezoid)
- Identification that shapes can be partitioned (split) into equal parts.
